Work has halted on the planned 31-story Edison development in downtown Milwaukee, that was vying to become the world’s tallest mass timber building. Foundation work wrapped in spring with a ceremonial groundbreaking, but developer Neutral announced on 18 September that construction is paused to address rising costs tied to tariffs and inflation.

Neutral CEO Nate Helbach described the move as a “difficult but prudent step” to ensure the long-term success of the US$133 million project. The Milwaukee Business Journal also reported a potential dispute between Neutral and general contractor C.D. Smith, which neither has commented if this has also played into the decision to pause construction.

The Edison is being built in the same city as the 25-story Ascent, currently North America’s tallest mass timber building. Neutral says the site will be secured during the pause, but no timeline has been set for resuming work.
