A Chicago Fire Department lieutenant who died while battling a high-rise fire on the morning of 5 April, 2023 was determined to have died by heart disease as determined by an autopsy. Lt. Jan Tchoryk collapsed in the stairwell of 1212 N. Lake Shore Dr while leading his crew to the floor where the fire began on the 27th story.
Three other firefights and two civilians were injured during the fire. All were later released from the hospital. The fire was confined to the 27th floor.
