10 Design’s shortlisted proposal for Shanghai West Bund is a 492,000-square-meter scheme that utilizes a human-scale retail configuration where six access points converge at a central plaza. Led by Design Partners Chin Yong Ng and Lukasz Wawrzenczyk, the design includes a five-story shopping mall with the green open plaza. The scheme also includes three high-rise office towers, a luxury serviced apartment, a hotel and high-end retail streets.

The two main mall entrances incorporate simple pixelated massing topped with greenery: the river-facing entrance with constituted concrete blocks and white façade to echo the adjacent museum, and the entrance connected to the subway with glass blocks to create an inviting retail environment.

The central plaza is covered with a circular translucent canopy, forming an oculus that brings natural light into the depth of the mall. At night, the plaza turns into a flexible public space for performances, exhibitions and projections.
