Carlo Ratti Associati has revealed plans to build a 218-meter-tall skyscraper in China that would grow crops using hydroponics, as well as contain spaces for selling and consuming the produce.
The Jian Mu Tower would occupy one of the few remaining plots in Shenzhen’s business district, building out the city’s robust skyline.
The 51-story building would dedicate 10,000 square meters to the cultivation of crops, creating a vertical hydroponic farm.
Hydroponic farming involves growing plants using water-based, mineral nutrient solutions as opposed to soil. The method is being touted as a space-saving solution to farming due to the ability to store and grow crops using vertical space.
