Vandals released hydrants on multiple floors in a Melbourne residential high-rise complex, causing extensive flooding in one of its towers.

On Wednesday 25 August around 6 pm local time, as yet unidentified perpetrators released hydrants from the 49th to the 16th floors in Tower A at West Side Place, located at 250 Spencer Street. The complex contains four towers, two completed this year and two under construction with planned completion in 2022. Towers A and B were evacuated, affecting about 1,000 residents.

Fire crews drained the stairwells in Tower A, which was the only tower affected. The extent of the flood damage, including the residential spaces, is still being determined. Tower B residents were cleared to return to their homes, and the residents of Tower A’s 73 apartments were put up in hotels.

The apartment complex is only accessible to residents via a fob. There are no security cameras in the section of the building where the flood was started. The luxury high-rise was built by developer Far East Consortium and designed by Cottee Parker.
