White Arkitekter has become the latest practice to put forward designs for Malmo Quay, a site by the River Tyne in Newcastle. The Swedish architect has submitted a hybrid application for both Malmo Quay and the neighboring Spillers Quay, including detailed plans for the former featuring an 18-story tower, 13 townhouses and a three-story block.
The designs replace plans revealed eight years ago to build 60 low-rise homes on Malmo Quay which were designed by Mikhail Riches working with Paris-based AWP, plus Feix&Merlin and Featherstone Young.
The latest plans for Malmo Quay would create 77 homes, as well as a communal courtyard, a play space, a new cycle hub, public realm and 24 car parking spaces. None of the homes would be designated affordable.
There would be a further 73 homes on Spillers Quay, which would be developed in a second phase. These would be next to the Whey Aye Wheel, an under-construction 140-meter Ferris wheel designed by Ryder Architecture, which was approved in 2019.
