Plans have been announced for a US$1.6 billion life sciences campus to be located on the east side of Manhattan and administered in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY).

Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) is the project lead for the SPARC Kips Bay development, which will transform the Brookdale Campus of Hunter College into a 1.5-million-square foot (139,354 square meters) center for research, entrepreneurship, and education geared at local economic benefits and training young New Yorkers for careers in tech and the health sciences.

The project’s scope will include an ambulatory care center, training center, DOE high school, Forensic pathology center, and commercial and laboratory space for life sciences.

Groundbreaking is expected in 2026 and will result in an estimated US$25 billion boost to the economy once it is completed. Construction is expected to end in 2031.
