At 875 N. Michigan Ave, formally known as the John Hancock Center, the operator of the observation deck on the 94th floor is expanding the experiential attraction and adding an event space. 360 Chicago saw the opportunity to bring Chicago’s first multilevel observation deck by expanding into the 95th and 96th floors.
The space, formerly home to the Signature Room restaurant, will be transformed into an experiential deck and a high-end event venue. Space on the 96th floor will also be converted into a private event area for corporate and social gatherings. Completion of this transformation is expected in 18 to 24 months.
“This is a generational opportunity,” said Nichole Benolken, managing director of 360 Chicago, noting the significance of revitalizing these iconic floors. Though the project cost hasn’t been disclosed, it is estimated in the tens of millions and reflects confidence in the future of the Magnificent Mile.
The Signature Room had closed in 2023, the owners citing economic challenges and safety concerns. 360 Chicago acquired the two upper floors in June 2024, and the expansion aligns with a broader trend of experience-driven attractions revitalizing retail corridors. Recent developments along the Mag Mile include the Harry Potter experience, a US$50 million magic venue, and the planned return of retail chain Uniqlo to the Avenue.
Alderman Brian Hopkins welcomed the announcement, calling it a boost of confidence for a corridor still recovering after the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re on the right trend line,” he said.
360 Chicago’s parent company, Paris-based Magnicity, is collaborating with WB-Immersive and architecture firm SOM on the project, promising an enhanced destination that celebrates the building’s architectural and cultural legacy.
