Updated plans were unveiled for the Barbican Centre’s renewal by Allies and Morrison and Asif Khan, aligning with the first stage of its 2025 public consultation. The renewal design was originally selected in April 2022 which aims to modernize the cultural complex while preserving its architectural heritage.

Designs for the recent plan show three key areas will be addressed: the Lakeside, Foyer, and Conservatory. The upgrades will focus on upgrading and repairing the structure alongside everyday wear that has occurred since the Centre’s opening in 1983. In the Conservatory, Harris Bugg Studio is redesigning the planting scheme to enhance public engagement.

Key interventions shared include removing the mezzanine above the Foyer which will optimize underutilized space and create a more inclusive environment. On the Lakeside, masonry repaving will resolve leaking issues, while lighting, glazing, and energy-efficient upgrades will enhance sustainability. Additional work will focus on increasing accessibility and modernizing other underused spaces.

This five-year renovation is set to begin in 2027, with an estimated cost of 231 million GBP (286 million USD). The Barbican Centre will mark its 50th anniversary in 2032.
