On 4 December 2024, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed the Spring Festival, the social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional new year, on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO highlighted that the Spring Festival, marking the start of the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year, involves various social practices, including prayers for good fortune and family reunions. It also features activities planned by elders and festive public events organized by communities.
The Spring Festival in 2025 will begin on 29 January. Shanghai Tower in China will have a special light display to celebrate this important moment and wish to bring good fortune to the coming year. CTBUH is sharing the invitation from Shanghai Tower for buildings around the world to join in lighting their structures and celebrate together this year’s Spring Festival.

Shanghai Tower is the third tallest building in the world and the tallest building in China. This mixed-use tower offers a sustainable way of living in a vertical city, with a mix of restaurants, shops, offices, and hotels distributed throughout the building. The skyscraper has been organized into nine vertical zones. Each of these vertical neighborhoods rises from a sky lobby with a light-filled garden atrium, creating a sense of community and supporting daily life with a varied program that caters to its tenants and visitors. Shanghai Tower was the Worldwide winner of the CTBUH Best Tall Building Award in 2016.
Other landmark tall buildings that CTBUH has confirmed will have a lighting display to celebrate the Spring Festival include the Burj Khalifa, Dubai; The World Trade Center and Empire State Building in New York City; Willis Tower, Chicago; and Torre Glòries in Barcelona.
