The Turkish President has made a promise to rebuild the country’s southern region that was heavily damaged by an earthquake on 6 February, 2023. Over 50,000 people died from the 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes that struck 11 Turkish provinces. A few weeks later, another two earthquakes occurred. President Erdogan has said he will prepare the city better for future disasters. Over 13.5 million people have been affected by the earthquakes. 

Projections made in 2021 stated that 200,000 buildings in the nation’s capital stand with a medium to high-level risk of collapsing. An investigation into an earlier earthquake in 1999 also found that many buildings in the city did not meet design requirements and were not earthquake resistant even. They did not meet design requirements and were not in compliance with regulations.
