On September 16, the University of Chicago marked the opening of Hyde Park Labs, a 300,000-square-foot (27,871-square-meter) commercial laboratory designed to accelerate science and innovation. Developed by Trammell Crow Company and Beacon Capital Partners, the facility is the second phase of the Harper Court development and brings together academic research, science-based companies, and the UChicago Science Incubator.
UChicago President Paul Alivisatos called the launch a “waypoint” in the University’s efforts to connect research with economic growth, emphasizing its role in strengthening the local innovation ecosystem. Half the building is leased by the University, including nearly 20,000 square feet (1858 square meters) for the Science Incubator, managed by the Polsky Center and Portal Innovations, alongside labs for the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and the Biological Sciences Division.
The facility hosts IBM’s Quantum System 2, the Southside STEM Station for community science engagement, and new ventures supported by the US$25 million Harper Court Ventures Fund. PME dean Nadya Mason highlighted opportunities to scale up breakthroughs in clean energy and advanced materials, while BSD dean Mark Anderson pointed to collaborative cancer research, synthetic biology, and AI initiatives.
Thirteen startups, including memQ, a quantum technology spinout from UChicago and Argonne, have already signed on.
