American Express has announced plans to construct a new global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center in New York City, marking the final commercial high-rise in the redevelopment of the World Trade Center campus. The 55-story building will span nearly two million square feet (186,000 square meters) and accommodate up to 10,000 employees.
Developed by Silverstein Properties and designed by Foster + Partners, the project will introduce a next-generation workplace designed to support collaboration, innovation, and employee well-being. Plans include flexible office environments, advanced smart-building systems, and more than an acre of landscaped outdoor terraces and gardens overlooking Lower Manhattan.
The fully electric tower will pursue LEED certification and incorporate energy-efficient systems and high-performance building technologies as part of a broader focus on sustainability and workplace health. Located at 200 Greenwich Street on land owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the development will be built under a long-term ground lease.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and will generate an estimated 3,200 construction-related jobs. Economic analysis projects the development will contribute approximately US$5.9 billion to New York City’s economy and US$6.3 billion to New York State overall.
The project represents a major step toward completing the World Trade Center complex, reinforcing Lower Manhattan’s role as a global commercial hub while advancing a new generation of high-performance office environments integrated with transit, public space, and urban infrastructure. Completion is expected in 2031.
