Akasaka Excel Hotel Tokyu will close permanently in late August 2023 as its lease comes to an end.

First opened in 1969, the 487-key hotel was originally called the Asakasa Tokyu Hotel before it was renamed in 2002. It’s distinctive pink-and-white striped exterior was designed by Ikko Tanaka.

The land had been acquired by Tokyu Jidosha, a car importer that was a subsidiary of Tokyu Corporation, at a government sale and was a car lot and gasoline stand but near the more vibrant government and traditional “ryotei” restaurant district. This led to its transformation into a business and entertainment hub, fueling the need for a luxury hotel to meet the changing customer needs.
