Construction has reached full height on the Yidan Center in Shenzhen, China, a major new cultural and educational landmark that will serve as the headquarters of the Chen Yidan Foundation and the Yidan Prize. Dedicated to advancing innovation and lifelong learning in education, the center will host spaces for academic research, exhibitions, and cultural exchange—embodying the foundation’s mission to promote global educational development.

Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the project is situated next to the Qianhai Museum, the Yidan Center anchors a new cultural quarter within China’s third-most-populous city. Its design draws inspiration from the surrounding mountainous terrain, historically shaped by trade and communication routes, to create a place of convergence and collaboration that reflects Shenzhen’s spirit of dynamism and innovation.

The 165,815-square-meter complex unfolds around a dramatic open-air “canyon,” with terraces and balconies cascading toward a central landscaped courtyard. Verdant pathways lead visitors from the surrounding streets into this public space, where sculpted architectural forms rise above, evoking geological strata. At the canyon’s base, a large oculus skylight bathes the interiors in natural light, establishing a strong visual and spatial connection between the public zones below and the architectural volumes above.

Designed as a high-performance, environmentally responsive building, the Yidan Center’s façade integrates insulated double-glazing and hybrid natural ventilation to enhance comfort and reduce energy use. External louvres offer solar shading while preserving daylight and views across Qianhai Bay, reinforcing the building’s layered, geological aesthetic. The project targets both China’s three-star Green Building standard and LEED Gold certification, employing a variable air volume (VAV) system for efficient climate control and integrating photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, and reuse systems to minimize environmental impact.

Within, the Yidan Center will unite the global network of the Yidan Prize and the Chen Yidan Foundation’s expertise to foster innovation in education. It will also serve as the home of YiPai, a community dedicated to lifelong learning. Located on the lower levels, YiPai will host inclusive programs and experiences that invite participation from people of all ages and backgrounds, reinforcing the center’s role as a nexus for knowledge, creativity, and collaboration.
