In Cebu, an 18-story hotel has been proposed which draws inspiration from its tropical setting. The project is planned to reach 79 meters and deliver 125 rooms.

The Abaca Resort Mactan features an open-air lobby, waterfalls, pools, and lush landscaping. Designed by Büro Ole Scheeren, the building uses arched colonnades to recall archaeological structures rooted in the jungle. On a 4,328 square meter site with a narrow beachfront, long piers extend guest access to the water.

The building’s gently curved silhouette rises above the tree canopy and the layered topography of pools and waterfalls. The subtly concave volume is, built up from a vertical lattice of arches that stack, recess, and protrude to form shaded balconies and floating pools in the sky.

Amenities beyond the pools include a spa, kids club, and gym. Among dining options, a rooftop restaurant provides panoramic views of the ocean and the city.

The design uses passive energy-saving strategies, capitalizing on natural ventilation, with the possibility for full cross ventilation of all interior spaces. Water conservation systems are customized for tropical climates and create biotopes throughout the waterscapes of the project. Materials will be primarily locally sourced.

Construction is expected to begin by third-quarter 2021, and complete by 2024.
