A long-vacant bank building in Southgate has been sold, with announced plans for a major redevelopment project. On Monday, 19 April, 2022, Friedman Real Estate announced that the company has sold the Southgate Tower, a 14-story office building at 16333 Trenton Road, which at the time it closed was occupied by PNC Bank.
The Farmington Hills-based company said the sale will make way for a mixed-use development opportunity that will allow for mixes of residential, retail, office and hotel. The purchaser, Southgate Tower, LLC, is committed to a project that will require a massive interior abatement, demolition and rebuild project. According to Friedman Real Estate, upon total build-out, there will be 201 multi-family units spreading across 14 stories, offering views of Detroit’s skyline and the Detroit River.
The site consists of 12.8 acres (5.1 hectares) leaving room for future development, which currently is not planned. According to Mayor Joseph Kuspa, the project is expected to take two-and-a-half years to complete, once it officially begins.
