A new mixed-use campus designed by Buro Ole Scheeren has been unveiled in Shenzhen’s Houhai district, marking the 45th anniversary of the city’s designation as a Special Economic Zone. The Houhai Hybrid Campus, spanning more than 1.4 million square feet, is envisioned as a model of culture-led, human-scale urbanism that merges nature, community, and innovation.
The development comprises four curving towers linked by a ring of elevated walkways that frame a central “oasis” of parks and water features. Designed for 24-hour use, the towers host flexible offices, co-living apartments, hotel rooms, and serviced residences, anchored by a cultural venue and connected by a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly circulation system.
Ecological features—including shaded walkways, natural ventilation, reflective pools, and diverse local plantings—are integrated with panoramic roof terraces and outdoor gathering spaces. Direct connections to the Shenzhen Metro and nearby Shenzhen Talent Park reinforce sustainable mobility and green integration.
Scheeren described the project as “a human-centric environment that completes the experience of a new urban ecosystem,” highlighting its role as both architectural and cultural landmark. The Houhai Hybrid Campus is under construction and scheduled to open in late 2026.
