The death toll has risen to 28 with 117 people still missing at the site of the collapsed Champlain Towers South building in Surfside.

The building was demolished late Sunday night ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa. The demolition will allow rescue crews to expand their search to the area next to where the building once stood.

After the initial collapse on 24 June, which destroyed 55 of the building’s units, rescue crews have been digging through up to 16 feet of concrete. The demolition will now allow heavy equipment to move about the site as needed.

Ahead of the demolition of the South tower, Champlain Towers East residents were urged to evacuate.

In Miami Beach, on Saturday a residential building was evacuated while envelope damage was investigated. And on Friday, Crestview Towers was evacuated for delinquency with its 40-year recertification.
