A Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and a member of the American Institute of Architects, Mr. Schmitt and his firm have won over 400 design awards including seven
Governor General’s Awards.

His notable projects include Canada’s National Arts Centre, the new Senate of Canada and McGill University’s New Vic Centre for Sustainability Systems and the York University’s new academic campus in Markham. Internationally the firm has built the Jerusalem City Hall, Israel’s Foreign Ministry, the Mariinsky Ballet Opera in St. Petersburg, Russia and Buddy Holly Hall in Texas. The new home for the New York Philharmonic, Geffen Hall at Lincoln Centre opened in New York City in October 8, 2022. He and his firm have completed two high density, pedestrian friendly, compact urban communities including new tall building typologies.

Don is a member of the Order of Canada.
