Luke Edwards
About
Luke Edwards is a junior designer within the structural engineering studio of Skidmore, Owings &
Merrill’s Chicago office, where he has experience in the design of a wide variety of structures
ranging from high-rise towers to transportation hubs to large-scale manufacturing facilities. His
professional interests are largely centered around the integration of statistical data and processes
into traditional approaches of structural engineering, including the study of probabilistic loads,
stochastic process-based structural reliability, and risk informed performance-based design, with
specific interest in wind loading and its consequences on the behavior of tall buildings.
Before joining SOM, Edwards was a graduate researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign, where he studied the classification of structures based on community level risk
tolerance. He is an avid proponent of the advancement of engineering education, frequently
volunteering with organizations focused on the spread of engineering programs to demographics
and regions historically less frequently granted those opportunities.
