Melissa Burton
Council Designated Expert
About
Melissa Burton is Arup’s Canada Consulting Practice Leader. She leads Arup’s Americas Wind Skills Network and is an Arup Fellow with specialist expertise in climate modelling and wind engineering. She focuses on the intersection of the built and natural environments and has nearly two decades of experience in looking at how the wind climate affects the buildings we design.
Melissa has worked as senior technical expert on many international projects and has extensive experience in wind tunnel testing and computational numerical analysis. She has a track record in investigating wind issues such as wind comfort, air movement, wind loading and dynamic response. Melissa has been involved in developing climate models for wind codes and providing design risk assessments.
Her technical expertise extends to beyond code approaches using advanced analytical tools to quantify and reduce design risk from wind and climate loading. She has been involved in optimizing design and reducing wind loads for many built structures.
Melissa sits on the Board of Directors of the Applied Technology Council whose mandate is to promote state of the art applications for use in mitigating the effects of natural hazards on the built environment. She has both lived and worked in the UK, Asia, and North America and has a global portfolio of project work.
