Owen Murphy has extensive experience in the passive fireproofing industry, cultivated over 40 years in the global market. Owen’s expertise spans structural steel fireproofing, hydrocarbon storage vessels fireproofing; fireproof lining of concrete in tunnels, fire stopping, fire rated smoke extract systems, encompassing both technical and marketing aspects.

Owen’s career began at Mandoval Coatings Ltd (a RTZ Co), where he focused on passive fireproofing solutions for the onshore and offshore oil and gas industries across the UK, Middle East, and Far East, as well as for high-rise buildings of the era. Owen gained significant experience with fireproofing system and solutions utilising cementitious, intumescent and boards, products.
This diverse background allows me to objectively advise the most appropriate solutions based on specific requirements and locations.

Subsequently, Owen transitioned to the MEP Industry with Firespray International Ltd which specialised in fire rated smoke extract, pressurisation, ventilation, and kitchen extract systems, broadening the knowledge base significantly within the passive fireproofing sector.

Owen now with Newkem firmly believes in the importance of collaborating with architects,
consultants, and developers to provide informed advice on material selection and assist in fire rating. This support is crucial for effective specification writing and ensuring seamless project execution. Furthermore, Owen is passionate about nurturing the next generation of architects and engineers, whom Newkem sees as the lifeblood of our industry. To this end, Owen advocates for providing comprehensive technical training from manufacturers through CPD and “lunch and learn” sessions. These initiatives should impart vital knowledge on material testing, specification, and best application methods.
