Phil Gardiner has over 40 years of experience in structural engineering. As managing director of Irwinconsult Australia, now a WSP company, he has led teams and provided design input to many of Melbourne's and Darwin's major and iconic buildings.

Phil's work includes high rise, modular, heritage and significant architectural buildings. in recent times the practice has also developed significant expertise in timber structures. one of these is the subject of this paper.

Phil has successfully provided services for projects ranging from award winning architectural buildings through to mass-produced precast structures design and construct and leaseback developments.

A major contributor to both structural and multidisciplinary design teams, Phil is known for his innovative and lateral design solutions and his support of significant and challenging architecture.

Phil’s project base includes structural consultancy in Hong Kong, Malaysia and the United States as well as all Australian mainland States. He is a leader both technically and managerially and is invited to present at seminars and to tertiary institutions on a regular basis.

Phil is also a keen contributor to the industry having served as a member of the Building Appeals Board for more than seven years and currently as a committee member for the Victorian Property Council. He has also served on the Melbourne committee of the CTBUH for 5 years and is a current board member of CTBUH Australia.
