A Novel Active Opening Window Module for Fire Safety

Tall building fires pose severe firefighting and rescue challenges due to vertical height and accumulated exposure of smoke. Traditional firefighting solutions often are limited due to the reach of water cannons and the speed of internal attack. Consequently, the safety of a skyscraper relies heavily on its own ability to manage hazards before firefighters arrive. This innovation pushes the design of tall buildings to a higher level by transforming the façade from a static, sealed skin into an active life-safety system that responds intelligently to fire.

 

Through numerous simulations and fire tests with prototype modules, actively opening windows at an early stage of fire is proven effective to avoid smoke accumulation, which is crucial to occupant safety. It also prevents fast fire spread by reducing smoke radiation, protecting the building and helps facilitate tall building firefighting. The system keeps the fire as a “localized fire” rather than a full multi-room disaster.
