New structural drawings have identified eight additional steel columns requiring reinforcement repairs at a 37-story Manhattan building undergoing conversion from offices to residential use. The findings follow the 7 July 2026 buckling of two columns that prompted evacuations and emergency stabilization work at the property.

According to documents obtained by The New York Times and reviewed by structural engineers, the eight columns, located across levels 33 through 35, had reinforcement described as having “missing/partial length” components. The deficiencies involved plates intended to strengthen the existing steel columns and maintain structural continuity as the building was modified to support additional floors above. Repair work on the eight columns has since been completed.

The findings expand on deficiencies identified during an earlier investigation of the July incident. Steel reinforcement plates specified in the structural plans had not been installed on the two columns that buckled, as well as four other columns on the 19th and 20th floors. The newly identified conditions have raised further questions about construction quality control and oversight during the conversion.

Thornton Tomasetti, retained to review the structure following the column failure, submitted and signed the new drawings. The documents indicate that the eight additional columns required repairs in accordance with structural drawings prepared by GACE, the engineering firm originally responsible for the renovation’s structural design.

Engineers consulted by The New York Times said the newly identified columns were unlikely to have contributed to the July buckling and partial collapse, with no apparent structural pattern connecting the two sets of deficiencies. The investigation nevertheless places renewed attention on the execution and verification of structural modifications as existing high-rise buildings are adapted for new uses.
